These were made by Johan Rohde (1856-1935) the Danish painter, lithographer and designer for his wife sometime between 1909-1914. They were subsequently passed through inheritance to his son and then grandson.

Made in a style called Skønvirke after a Danish magazine, established in 1914, for the arts industry. The term is used for a particular Danish style direction; a mixture of Jugendstil (German), Art Nouveau (French), Arts and Crafts (English), on the one hand, and Nordic National Romanticism on the other. The style flourished in the same period as the national romance, ie. ca. 1895-1915.
